Kidliterate

Awesome premise. Good writing; author shows a lot of promise--I bet subsequent books will improve on the first, and that doesn't always happen. But she loses at least half a star for having one character ask another "You want to come with?" NO. Talk about pulling me right out of the story. Leaving it in was sloppy. Have a fantasy world or have a modern world, but don't have a fantasy world where your character lives in a futuristic China and uses a dated US regionalism. (apparently there's one of these in Scorpio Races, but in three reads and a listen I've never noticed it. Please don't point it out to me.)
